COVID-19 HC Statistics Vaccinations

COVID-19 vaccination update

This weekend I received my second COVID-19 vaccine. While I certainly feel lucky to live in a country with ample vaccine supply, other countries are not so lucky. Let’s take a look at the numbers from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. These numbers are updated through May 2, 2021.

First, you’ll see that the US far and away has administered the most vaccines with over 96 million. India is in second place with 27 million but India’s population is four times that of the US. In terms of vaccination rates, unsurprisingly many small countries are able to vaccinate a large share of their population. Outside of city-states and small island countries, Israel (#3), United Arab Emirates (#5), Chile (#7), Bahrain (#8), US (#10), United Kingdom (#13), and Serbia (#14) all rank highly on the share of individuals fully vaccinated.

In the U.S., California has the highest number of people fully vaccinated at over 11 million but administered the most vaccines, but California is actually slightly below average in vaccination rates. New Jersey leads the US in vaccination rate at 63% with New Mexico a distant second at 36%. The states with the lowest vaccination rates are largely in the Southeast. The states where the lowest share of people are fully vaccinated are Mississippi, Alabama, Utah, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, and Louisiana.
